BFTAA -- Robotics class

The Robotics class is part of the robotics competition program. Students will learn principles of design, programming and team work.
• Class will begin Late August or Early September
• Classes for middle school and High School will use the VEX Robotics program
• Elementary students will use the Lego robotics platform
• Class times Thursday 6:00 to 7:30, Saturday 12:30

Cisco Certified Network Academy

Cisco Certified Network Academy (CCNA)

The DuBois Learning Center has offered Cisco certification classes since the fall of 2001.

Classes are conducted on Tuesday's (6p - 9p) & Saturday (10a - 2p). Instruction is enhanced with hands on project based learning.

Courses are designed to help students prepare for entry-level career opportunities, continuing education, and globally recognized certifications. Each course is supported by classroom instruction, online assessments, hands-on labs, and interactive learning tools to help students succeed.

Introduction to Networks

This course introduces the architecture, structure, functions, components, and models of the Internet and other computer networks. The principles and structure of IP addressing and the fundamentals of Ethernet concepts, media, and operations are introduced to provide a foundation for the curriculum. By the end of the course, participants will be able to build simple LANs, perform basic configurations for routers and switches, and implement IP addressing schemes. 

Routing & Switching Essentials

This course teaches learners how to install, operate, configure, This course describes the architecture, components, and operations of routers and switches in a small network. Participants learn how to configure a router and a switch for basic functionality. By the end of this course, participants will be able to configure and troubleshoot routers and switches and resolve common issues with RIPv1, RIPng, single area and multi-area OSPF, virtual LANs, and inter-VLAN routing in both IPv4 and IPv6 networks.

Graphic Design and Web Development


This class will introduce basic graphic design and web development skills to teens between the ages of: 14-18. This will include an overview of project management, graphic design, marketing, and web development. The graphic design portion will include commercial products (Adobe Photoshop, etc.) and freeware (Gimp). The project management component will discuss the thought process behind creating a graphical image that will market a product. Web development will employ the use of commercial products (Adobe Dreamweaver) and freeware alternatives ( Lastly, the marketing aspect will provide an overview of basic marketing concepts (branding, prescence, target demographic, etc.)

This class would be once a week involving an instructional session on Saturday ( 1 hour) and optional lab time following the lecture ( 1 hour). Students will also be encouraged to work independently as this will mirror an actual work environment. The course will span a regular school semester culminating in a final project that could be published or hosted on the learning centers site.

Going forward students who are consistent and demonstrate mastery of the skills being taught could possibly administer the learning center site on an intern basis to gain practical skill for future employment. Students who complete the introductory courses would be eligible for a more advanced class that would be fed by tier one students or those demonstrating proficiency in the prerequisite skillsets.

You'll compare the various Linux distributions (versions), you'll install the Ubuntu Linux operating system, update it with the latest patches, learn about various software options and install some of the most commonly used software applications, you'll learn convenient ways to get help while working in Linux, you'll explore Linux file systems and learn how to set file and directory permissions, you'll practice administering users and groups, you'll configure network settings and learn how to share resources with computers running both Linux and the Windows operating system,

North Star Digital Skills Assessment

North Star Digital Skills Assessment

The Northstar Digital Literacy Project defines basic skills needed to perform tasks on computers and online. The ability of adults to perform these tasks can be assessed through online, self-guided modules. Included are basic computer digital literacy standards and modules in ten main areas: Basic Computer Use, Internet, Windows Operating System, Mac OS, Email, Microsoft Word, Social Media, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Information Literacy.

When individuals pass the assessments at approved sites, they can obtain the Northstar Digital Literacy Certificate. This provides a credential for employment. There is no cost to complete the online assessments.
